Remember Remember the 5th of November--gunpowder treason and plot
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes Guy Fawkes 'twas his intent to blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below--poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catched--with a dark lantern and a burning match.
Holla Boys! Holla Boys! Let the bells ring! Holla Boys! Holla Boys! God save the King!
On the night of the 5th of November, 1605, Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was apprehended and arrested for his participation in a plot to explode the House of Lords and assassinate the King and his parliament. The interruption of the plot and the saving of the king caused celebration to break out all across London, with bonfires!
Later, the Observance of 5th November Act, turned this event into an annual holiday, which was for a time remembered with bonfires and fireworks. From what I understand, that is not as popular today, but it is with me! If not fireworks, most certainly a bonfire!
I love this story, which my brother, Charley Daniel, shared with me. I always love the interruption of a plot to destroy! God save the King! God save my brother!
